Monday

UNIT TITLE:
Seeing the Story - Communicating Through Camera Angles

Statement of Inquiry
Media creators use camera angles and shot composition to communicate perspective, direct audience attention, and create meaning.

LEARNING INTENTION:

  1. Identify and correctly define the 12 camera angles presented in the instructional video.
  2. Plan a short video sequence that intentionally incorporates all 12 required angles.
  3. Demonstrate proper camera handling, framing, composition, and equipment care.
  4. Capture original footage using each required angle.
  5. Organize and manage digital media files effectively.
  6. Edit footage into a clear, visually engaging final video.
  7. Evaluate how different camera angles influence meaning and audience perception.
  8. Reflect on their technical and creative growth.

SUCCESS CRITERIA

  1. Correctly identify all 12 required camera angles/shots.
  2. Include all 12 angles in the final video.
  3. Clearly label or otherwise identify each angle.
  4. Demonstrate intentional framing and composition.
  5. Capture stable, properly exposed, and usable footage.
  6. Organize and edit media effectively.
  7. Create a polished final video with logical pacing.
  8. Demonstrate responsible use of cameras and equipment.
  9. Participate in critique and revision.
  10. Reflect on how camera angles affect storytelling.

REMEMBER :

  1. Your FIRST responsibility is the daily news. That comes first ALWAYS.
    If you turn regular assignments in late, b/c you are out filming, that is OK. (You might need to remind me though so I don't take points off.)
  2. You will NOT get any zeros as long as you wish to turn it in.

  2. Film 12 camera angles that are frequently used in cinematography.
  3. HERE is a link to a YouTube video that describes the different angles.
  4. You should do the following:
    1. watch the video
    2. In Word, take notes of what each of the camera angles are with a picture that represents the angle. I suggest using a table to organize your work.
    Upload to FOCUS when done.
    3. Get a partner and go on campus and film the angles, alternating speaking roles, describing what the camera angles are
    Each partner should do 6 and the other can do 6.
    YOU CAN DO A TEAM PROJECT IF YOU BOTH WORK ON IT!!!!
    4. Use the main Sony Cameras to film everything.
    5. Focus on good angles, camera work, clean audio and good vocal quality.
    Don't forget intro/outro and tell what the camera angles are.
  5. Due in a week or so depending on other work...
  6. Exit Ticket
    Students choose one camera angle and explain:
    When would a filmmaker intentionally use this angle, and what effect could it have on the audience?

  2. Check out your Future Video Page on your old website for new ideas that you can film this year. You should think about what project you want to make YOURS.
  3. SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS - Peter Walbeck
  4. Time to practice some transitions - there are 8 mentioned in the video
  5. Watch video and get an understanding of what they are.
    Take some notes, so you can use these at a future time, but you don't need to turn in anything.
  6. You should work with a partner and each film 3 transitions.
    Your transition should morph into their transition.
  7. Don't forget you need Intro/Outro and description of what you are doing.
    NO BLACK INTROS!
  8. Your goal this week is to film 6 of the 8 transitions by this week and turn in a quality project ASAP - of course this depends on what you are doing, filming, writing news, etc.
  9. You (and partner) will turn in 1 video demonstrating the 6 transitions and should each contribute equally.
    So maybe each partner does 3 and films the other person for the other 3 videos?
  10. Creativity and interest is highly recommended.
  11. Yes, you can (and should) film at home or another location.
  12. You can use your phones or my cameras if needed.

  2. Create a PSA on something around campus - Phones, hallway etiquette, how to be a successful student, etc. Come up with something funny and interesting.
  3. Do this with a partner - you probably want to make it a team (2 not 10 people) project.
  4. BE CREATIVE, thoughtful and funny BUT not too funny....
  5. Run your ideas past your boss.
  6. Montly Video - what are you your thing? I need solid ideas by the end of the week.
    Remember if you are relying on others for your video, it makes things difficult.
